Stride length is personal

The common assumption of 2,000 steps per mile comes from a 2.64-foot stride, which fits an average-height man walking casually. A 5'2" woman walking at the same pace needs closer to 2,400 steps to cover a mile — a 20% difference that compounds across a day. Stride also lengthens with speed: running covers roughly 30% more ground per step than strolling.

Where 10,000 steps came from

Not from research. It was a 1965 marketing slogan for a Japanese pedometer called the manpo-kei, literally '10,000-step meter'. Later research has found most of the mortality benefit arrives by around 7,500 steps a day, with gains flattening after that — the round number stuck because it is memorable, not because it is a threshold.
