Do You Really Need 10,000 Steps? What the Evidence Says

Where 10,000 came from
Not from a study. In 1965 a Japanese company launched a pedometer called the manpo-kei — literally '10,000-step meter' — and the number stuck because it is round, memorable and looks ambitious. It was a marketing decision, and it has shaped public health messaging for sixty years.
What the research actually found
Large prospective studies published since 2019 consistently find that mortality risk falls steeply from very low step counts up to around 7,000–8,000 steps a day, then flattens. The improvement between 4,000 and 8,000 steps is large; the improvement between 8,000 and 12,000 is small and, in several cohorts, not statistically distinguishable from zero.
For older adults the plateau arrives earlier — around 6,000–7,000 steps. Intensity adds something on top: cadence above roughly 100 steps a minute is associated with further benefit independent of the total.
Distance depends on your own stride, which is roughly 41–42% of your height. At 170 cm, 10,000 steps is about 7 km or 4.3 miles. At 155 cm it is closer to 6.4 km. The widely quoted '2,000 steps per mile' assumes an average-height man walking casually.
Why the round number still works
A target that is memorable and slightly ambitious changes behaviour better than a precisely calibrated one that nobody remembers. If 10,000 gets you walking and 7,500 would not, 10,000 is the better number for you — the health benefit of a target you hit beats the accuracy of one you ignore.
The honest caveat is that step targets can also demotivate. Someone averaging 3,000 steps who is told the goal is 10,000 may conclude it is unreachable and do nothing, when moving to 5,000 would capture much of the available benefit.
A reasonable target
Aim for 7,000–8,000 steps a day if you are under 60 and 6,000 if you are older, with some of it brisk enough to raise your breathing. Then, if you enjoy chasing 10,000, chase it — there is no evidence of harm, only diminishing returns.
