Current yield ignores the capital gain

A bond bought at 940 and redeemed at 1,000 returns 60 dollars of capital on top of the coupons, and current yield misses it entirely. That is why a discount bond's yield to maturity always exceeds its current yield, and why the two figures diverge most on long-dated bonds trading far from par.

Current yield = annual coupon ÷ market price; approximate YTM adds the amortised discount
