The 50-hour problem

A $65,000 salary is $31.25 an hour at 40 hours a week. Work 50 hours and the same salary is $25.00 — a 20% pay cut that never appears on a payslip. Anyone weighing a salaried job against contract work should run this number using their real hours, not the ones in the offer letter.

The rule of thumb, and when it fails

Divide the salary by 2,000 for a quick hourly figure: $65,000 becomes $32.50. It is close because 40 hours × 50 weeks = 2,000, and it fails for anyone working part-time, compressed hours or regular overtime.

The formula

Hourly = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks worked)

Every result on this page comes from this formula. Nothing is rounded until the final display, so figures match a spreadsheet to the cent.
