A 4× ROAS can still lose money

ROAS measures revenue, not profit. At a 20% gross margin you need a 5× ROAS just to break even on the advertising, before any fixed costs. The break-even figure above is the number to compare against — a campaign beating 4× looks excellent and is a loss at that margin.

ROAS = revenue ÷ ad spend; break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ gross margin
