Markup and margin are not the same number

A 50% markup on a $60 cost gives a $90 price and a 33.3% margin, not 50%. Markup is measured against cost, margin against price. Confusing the two is the most expensive arithmetic error in small retail, because it makes every product look a third more profitable than it is.

The formula

Price = cost × (1 + markup); margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup)
