The contribution margin is the number to watch

Every unit sold contributes price minus variable cost towards the fixed costs. Raising the price by 10% on a product with a 40% margin cuts the break-even volume by a fifth — far more leverage than cutting fixed costs by the same percentage. It is also why low-margin businesses are so sensitive to small price changes.
