Where 238 comes from
A 2019 meta-analysis of nearly 200 studies put average adult silent reading of non-fiction at 238 words per minute, with fiction slightly faster. Speaking is much slower — a comfortable presentation pace is 130 to 150 wpm, which is why a 2,000-word script runs about 15 minutes, not eight.
