Why a 50% fall needs a 100% rise
Percentages are measured against whatever the base is at the time, and a fall shrinks the base. Drop 100 by 50% and you have 50; getting back to 100 means adding 50 to a base of 50, which is a 100% rise. This asymmetry is why investment losses hurt more than equivalent-sized gains help.
Discounts stack multiplicatively
A 20% discount followed by a further 10% off is not 30% off. It is 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72, so 28% off. Retailers know this; shoppers frequently do not.
