Price per Square Foot, Unit Price and Other Comparisons That Mislead

The appeal and the trap

Dividing price by size produces a single figure that ranks options instantly. It is genuinely useful — and it works by discarding every difference except the one in the denominator, which is exactly why it misleads when those differences matter.

Where unit pricing breaks

Property. Price per square foot compares two similar homes on the same street well and two neighbourhoods badly. Land value, lot size, ceiling height, garage space, finish quality and whether a basement counts as living area all move the figure without saying anything about which house is better value.

Groceries. The larger pack is usually cheaper per unit, and it is a worse deal if you throw a third of it away. Unit price assumes full consumption, which for perishables is an assumption rather than a fact.

Different denominators. Supermarkets quote per 100 g on one product and per item on the next, which makes the shelf edge label useless for comparison exactly where you need it most.

Quality that scales differently. Cost per gigabyte says nothing about drive speed or reliability; cost per calorie says nothing about nutrition. When the denominator is not the thing you actually want, the ratio is precise and irrelevant.

A better habit

Use unit price to shortlist, never to decide. Once it has narrowed a field of twenty to a field of three, switch to comparing what is actually different between them. And when two unit prices differ by a wide margin, treat that as a question — what does the cheaper one not have? — rather than as an answer.
